Path To Poetry, Prose and Photography

What gets me diving into a piece? What’s the key to the lightbulb going on? Which comes first, the idea, the words or the picture?

What is my pathway to creating pieces of art be those poetry, prose, photography or sculpture?

The answer is that sometimes an idea comes to me, I make a few notes and let it rest. Then, I go back to it and start writing, drawing, cutting and gluing. Other times, I will be out and about and take a photo. I’ll be looking at something and my curiosity will grab me to move the camera, crouch down, stretch up and in essence to change where the lens sees what I am observing.

I’ll look at the image and see Miriam’s Well or a piece of parchment or a representation of someone I know. That is what happend with The Will and Well to Wander, I looked at the trees and saw a well for water. That is what happened with Write: Left to Right or Right to Left. I picked up the bark, looked at it, took the photo and saw an ancient piece of parchment.

When the creative and curious juices start to flow, almost to overtake me, then all else is put aside. I pace, I go to the table, I gather materials and then don’t talk to me, don’t ask me questions. Hush and leave me be. Know, that if you are in the house or nearby when this strikes, you may hear me call your name, ask you to hold something up, ask for you to cut something or ask you to listen to me read something outloud.

Below are some of the recent pieces of poetry and prose accompanied by photographs I’ve taken.

A Flicker of Hope

Written as a process piece about the humanitarian crises in the Middle East.

Ode To My Art Smock

Written a few days after visiting The Black Library and thinking about my dad.

The Will and Well to Wander

This poem will take you for a stroll during which I share what I saw in a tree. Perhaps you will see it, too.

JB's Doorpost

This poem will give you insight into the hard working man who passed away before he could become my father-in-law. He would be proud of the boy he raised to become the man who would become my husband and the step-father of my children.

Here, I Stand

Read the connection between a prayer and a wheelbarrow.

Write: Left to Right or Right to Left

When I found a piece of bark and a feather, I found myself contemplating whether to write from left to right or right to left. Read this piece to go on this journey with me.

A Look Behind the Scenes

Read about part of the creation process
